J. C. Charyk
Trades & Technology

Hands on and relevant - that is trades and technology at JCC!!!

Trades and technology have been part of the education program at J.C.Charyk School since the 1960’s. Since then it has morphed into a cutting edge example of how students can explore, experiment and develop relevant skills and knowledge. From basic welding, woodworking and mechanics, programming has grown to include CNC programming and operations, semi-automated welding, mechanical-electronic diagnosis, gas-tungsten welding, 3D printing, robotics, coding and more. Many former students have gone on to successful careers in the trades and technologies in fields such as machining, welding, mechanics, oil and gas, furniture design and construction, and engineering.

The trades and technology programs at JCC began with the multi-activity industrial arts movement of the 1960’s and have changed over time to meet the needs of industry and student interests. We have come a long way from subjects such as plastics, ceramics and screen printing to where we are now with computer controlled routers, 3D printing, resin casting and complex welding processes. It only stands to reason that we will continue to build student capacity in these and other cutting edge practices. Even with the evolution of skills towards more technological processes, students still explore and excel at fine woodworking using traditional machines and tools. Students are also encouraged to participate in Skills Alberta events which expose students to various trades and skills through friendly competition.

Programming in the trades and technologies starts in junior high and goes through grade 12. Examples of some of the courses which high school students can earn credits include the following:
